2023 Hike For Starr Exceeds Goal With $153k Raised
Fundraiser benefits Starr Hospice patient care and community programs
DUBLIN, CA – Despite drizzly weather, nearly 850 supporters of Starr Hospice gathered at Del Valle Regional Park on May 6 for the nonprofit organization’s signature Hike For Starr.
An impressive 1,174 registrants committed to the fundraiser and helped raise $153,000 For Starr, but late-spring inclement weather deterred some families from attending the hike itself. (The 2022 event had a record-breaking 1,300 registrants and $180,000 in funds raised.)
Unprecedented winter storms kept Del Valle Regional Park closed to the public for several preceding months. The park opened just one week ahead of Starr's planned event.
“It was looking like we’d have to relocate or reschedule our event, which no organizer of a large annual effort like this wants to do,” says Marc Rovetti, event chair and Starr's Director of Philanthropy. “Fortunately, park management gave us a last-minute green light. We’re grateful to the team at Del Valle for helping us keep this tradition with only minor adjustments.”
With some park facilities still closed from damage, Starr brought in portable restrooms and extra tenting to accommodate event guests. Lawn games were canceled, but the hike itself, a barbecue lunch sponsored by MCE Corp., and silent auction continued undisturbed, save for light showers throughout the day.
Kudos to Team Sensiba and Fari Safinia, the Top Fundraising Team ($6,800) and Individual ($1,500), respectively.
“The relationship between Starr and the Tri-Valley community is remarkable,” Rovetti says. “Starr has provided immeasurable support for thousands of families since our founding in 1980. We see many of these same people, in turn, give back in ways that allow us to continue our mission and to help the next generation. It’s uplifting to witness the generosity of so many, and reassuring to know that volunteer time and donor dollars go right back into the place we all call home.”
Registration for the 2024 event will open in January at TheHikeForHope.com.
About the Hike
The Hike For Starr is an annual fundraiser For Starr Hospice. Money raised through registrations and peer-to-peer supporting donations benefits patient care and helps keep grief support, dementia education, and family caregiver resources available to the public at no charge. The community’s participation helps Starr Hospice care for more than 2,000 East Bay neighbors each year. The event began in 2010 and, with two skipped years, the 2023 event was our 12th edition.
